There’s no list of hatchbacks that doesn’t name the Renault Kwid. The car has earned itself a reputation since its launch as a small but muscular hatchback. The Kwid is small, make no mistake, but the package you get for the price makes it one of the best first cars of all time.

The Renault Kwid is powered by a very efficient 1.0L, 3-cylinder engine that produces 67 bhp and 91 Nm of torque. It has an ARAI-certified mileage of 21.7 kmpl, though you can get anywhere between 18-20 kmpl in normal driving conditions. The small hatch is available in both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT options.

2. Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago is one of the hot-selling hatchbacks in India and there are many reasons behind it. The hatchback offers great value for money and comes in both petrol and CNG options.

The petrol variant of the Tiago is powered by a 1.2L, 3-cylinder, Revotron engine that produces 84 bhp of power and 113 Nm of torque. The power is transmitted to wheels via a 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox. On the other hand, the 1.2L CNG engine is slightly less powerful with 72 bhp power and 95 Nm of torque. The CNG, however, does not come with an automatic gearbox option.

Tata Tiago price starts from INR 5.6 lakhs and goes up to INR 8.15 lakhs for the top model.

 

3. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The evolution of the i10 naming has been interesting for people looking to buy their first car. The latest Grand i10 Nios continues the same legacy with excellent styling and an impressive engine. The car is available in five variants distributed with petrol and CNG engines.

Unlike the Tata Tiago, the 1.2L Kappa engine in the Nios is a 4-cylinder unit that produces 82 bhp power and 114 Nm of torque. The CNG variant gets its power by the same 1.2L Kappa bi-fuel engine that makes 68 bhp and 95 Nm of torque. The CNG variants, despite being less powerful, is more frugal.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios price starts from INR 5.73 lakhs for the base variant and extends up to INR 8.51 lakhs for the top-of-the-line variant.

 

4. Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Maruti Suzuki Swift deserves to be in any list of top 5 hatchbacks, which has been the case for years. The latest iteration of Swift gets a newer engine and fresh styling. The red and black dual-tone colour is the signature model that most people opt to buy.

Under the hood, the Maruti Swift has a 1.2L, 4-cylinder, Dual Jet engine with 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox options. This engine makes 89 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. There is also a 1.2L CNG engine making 76 bhp and 98.5 Nm of torque.

And as for the pricing, the Maruti Suzuki Swift price starts at INR 5.99 lakhs. However, the top-end ZXi Plus AMT Dual-tone goes for INR 9.03 lakhs.

 

5. Tata Altroz

We picked the Tata Altroz ahead of the more practical Hyundai i20 because of the 5-star safety rating. And just like most other hatchbacks in the list, the Altroz comes with a CNG-powered engine. However, you also get a diesel engine option here.

The 1.2L petrol engine makes 87 bhp and 115 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 1.4L diesel is a turbocharged engine and makes 89 bhp and 200 Nm torque. The CNG, as usual, is the least powerful version with 72 bhp and 103 Nm of torque.

The Tata Altroz price starts from INR 6.6 lakhs for the petrol, INR 8.15 lakhs for the diesel, and INR 7.55 lakhs for the CNG.
